I was my first time to visit the museum and it was a great experience! I guess every 3rd Wednesday of the month is free admission! I definitely will plan to come back again during the free days rather than paying $25 because I’m baller on budget… Although it is definitely worth the price.

This place brings the whole universe under one roof – an aquarium, a planetarium, a natural history museum and more! The building was packed of all ages and different ethnic groups.

The 3D bug show provided video to educate the public. I think they did a great job on making the experience exciting by adding drama and humor to the story they were showing. One thing that might make this 3D experience a little more exciting and memorable is by adding more effects to the enviroment such as having the chair vibrate or change the scent of the air to match the video.

The more research I make on this project the more interesting it gets. The good thing about this is I get enough content and info for me to share and teach my audience. The bad thing about this is, as I go through my research I come up with more and more ideas which makes it seem impossible to finish the project; but at the same time it is pretty exciting to learn new things.

Instructional Prototype – The Solar System

Overview: I will create an interactive model of the solar system and teach how to memorize the position of each planets, in order, relative to the sun. Each of the planets will also be a unique navigation that will bring the user “closer” to the planet once they click it.

It is still a work in progress…

Target Audience: Ages 9 and up who are interested about the universe and the solar system.

Goal: Try to include the 8 pathways to learning. Include a beginning, middle and end (credits or congratulations page.) It needs to teach something interactively, and actively engages different learning styles.

How I will try to engage through 8 learning styles:

words (linguistic intelligence) – content and information about each planets/bodies
numbers or logic (logical-mathematical intelligence) – the solar system, 9 planets
pictures (spatial intelligence) – pictures of the planets of our solar system
music (musical intelligence) – ambient, rollover/mouse effect
self-reflection (intrapersonal intelligence) – Mnemonic phrase – “My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas”
a physical experience (bodily-kinesthetic intelligence)
a social experience (interpersonal intelligence) – Fun quiz at the end.
an experience in the natural world (naturalist intelligence) – advice to go out and look at the sky at night

Learning Experience

Hearing different stories from everyone about their education background from different countries, cultures, and morals was very inspirational and made me realize how my background has effected me to where I am now.

As a Filipino-American, my whole family immigrated to the U.S. to pursue a better way of life. Coming here during my 5th grade, I was able to have memories and compare the difference with teaching style and student behaviors.

I remembered going to my first day of class in the U.S., the first thing I realized were the students having a lot more freedom in the classroom. Everyone was having conversation with eachother during class. In the Philippines, no students were allowed to talk in the classroom without the teacher’s permission. I also noticed how students were calling the teachers by Mr./Mrs. their last name. We were not to call our teachers by their name or last name, instead Sir or Maam.

The main difference at the time was probably the level of education that was being taught at that grade. As a 5th grader in the Philippines we were taught middle school and high school level math. I was surprised of having simple multiplication and division for homework on my first week of school in the U.S.

There are many other differences between the two countries from my experiences, good and bad, but I am blessed and thankful of where I am where I am now…

Mathemagic Trick!

The challenge was to create a learning magic trick demonstration for 9yr olds. This presentation has a framework which includes: an opening page that both introduces the exercise and its goal(s) and an acknowledgement of success page. I used images with simple and clear instructions that are easy to follow. Having a consistent navigation is also important for the demonstration to allow the user to either go to the next step or go back.

Multimedia in Learning Applications

Many of the problems that dyslexic students experience when learning come from the following difficulties:

Difficulties in reading and writing
Difficulties in recognizing or confusion between letters or familiar words
Mispronunciations
Difficulty in carrying out instructions
Directional confusion
Difficulty achieving automaticity (result of learning, repetition, and practicing)
Problems with sequencing
Difficulty organizing work Multimedia has the potential to reduce or even remove such problems.

Examples of media include: text, sound, graphics, video and animation. Combined together, the potential of multimedia to enhance learning has been for some dyslexic people the turning point in their lives. No longer are dyslexic students required to read and study pages and pages of text. For example, learning materials, containing text, can be supplemented with and/or represented in graphical and auditory forms. Dyslexic students are able to comprehend meaning from what is being spoken about a picture.
